Musician and liturgical composer Rory Cooney led the Diocese of Superior’s 11th annual Music Ministry Retreat and Workshop Feb. 3-4 at Turtleback Conference Center, Rice Lake. Cooney is the director of music and liturgy at St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, Ill. The theme of this year’s retreat was “Turn around: Hearing the call of Jesus in Lent and Easter.”

About 60 musicians attended the workshop on Friday evening and Saturday. Here, Colleen Garnevicus, a member of Immaculate Conception, Eau Claire, in the Diocese of La Crosse, asked presenter Rory Cooney how liturgical musicians can avoid being misconstrued as political when they are selecting social justice-themed songs based on the Gospel. The Bible is political, Cooney responded. (Catholic Herald photos by Anita Draper)
