Significant anniversaries celebrated in original Wisconsin dioceses

The first diocese within the state of Wisconsin was founded with Milwaukee as diocesan seat in 1843; the diocese will begin to celebrate 175th anniversary in November.

On March 3, both the dioceses of Green Bay and La Crosse celebrated 150 years since their creation as dioceses. La Crosse’s Bishop William Callahan celebrated Mass at the oldest church in the diocese as the first of a series of celebratory events.

During a Mass of thanksgiving in Green Bay’s restored cathedral, Bishop David Ricken brought attention to the legacy of the diocese. He blessed the assembly with a relic of the True Cross of Jesus that was brought to Green Bay by its first bishop. Bishop Ricken called on the faithful to a spirituality of multiplication where one commits to making two or three disciples, who in turn would continue to process. He said, “We are very comfortable. The Holy Spirit is pushing us … to move from a church of comfort to become missionary disciples.”
The diocese of Superior was formed in May 1905 out of these two dioceses.
