TOMAHAWK — Youths from St. Mary Parish shaved their heads March 19 to raise money for childhood cancer research.
The team hoped to raise $6,000, and Fr. John Anderson, pastor of the parish cluster, promised to shave his head if they met the goal.
“Not only did they meet the goal, they blew it away,” said Rita Lee, principal of St. Mary School. “They managed to raise over $7,500! Fr. John even let each of the kids take a pass across his (head) with the razor! Very brave!”
The group of kindergarten through eighth-grade students organized the event through St. Baldrick’s, a national organization that fundraises for childhood cancer research through head-shaving events.
The St. Mary’s Angels team consisted of students from St. Mary School and the parish youth group, Lee said.
“In the end, several people who were not signed up for the team also showed up to get shaved and support a great cause,” she added.
