Day of the Dead celebration

On Sunday, Nov. 12, at noon at St. Mary’s Church, Bruce, there will be a traditional Latin American Day of the Dead celebration.

The Day of the Dead is a Latin American tradition of celebrating loved ones who have died. All are welcome to attend and celebrate with the local Hispanic community.

The event will include the Liturgy of the Word and Ofrenda, the remembrance of the dead. A light meal with traditional Mexican pastries will follow with snacks and refreshments. The children’s movie “Coco,” which touches on many of the traditions, will also be shown.

Family Advent preparation

A family event will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes, Dobie, in the basement dining hall. There will be hands-on Thanksgiving and Advent preparation activities for all ages. Toddlers and babies can learn and play in the children’s corner.

Families are invited to come and go any time during the designated hours and pick out activities that are of interest. The faith-related activities will assist in deeper learning and living of Thanksgiving and the Advent season. They include among others: Thankful Garden fall centerpiece (bring own container or use provided), beeswax Advent candle making, assembling a wooden base Advent wreath, an Advent wreath blessing kid, building a manger for Jesus, making a 25-piece wooden countdown to Christmas and helping with a community service item. The event is free; however, donations will be accepted to offset costs. Volunteers are welcome; call Cathy Solum at 715-234-6874.

Advent Women’s Retreat

St. Bridget’s Parish in River Falls will host a Women’s Retreat Saturday, Nov. 9, beginning with fellowship at 8:30 a.m. With the theme “Doing It All: Finding God in the Chaos,” the retreat will run from 9 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. with a simple lunch to follow. Deborah Gretzinger of St. Agnes Parish, Green Bay, will lead the retreat; after leading a well-received retreat in March, retreat coordinators invited her back. Suggested donation is $10.
