Lauren and Abby from St. Mary’s School, Tomahawk, test water during lessons on hydroponic gardening. Thanks to the ABCs for Healthy Community grant from Marshfield Clinic Health System and Security Health Plan, Ascension Good Samaritan Hospital, and the Lincoln County Health Department, the students are learning about hydroponic gardening. During the second week of school, lettuce seeds were planted; last week, they were transplanted in the hydroponic system. Students check water pH and nutrient levels on a daily basis to maintain a healthy growing environment. “They are excited to reap their first harvest in October and share the produce with the school lunch program,” said principal Rita Lee. “Future harvests will be shared with other entities in the community such as the Open Arms Soup Kitchen.” (Submitted photo)
