Ah, an election year. A marvelous time to pack up, set sail and drop anchor near some South Sea island, perhaps. Take a long vacation. Until, say, mid-November.
Being a Catholic has never been easy. A quick glance at the lives of the saints can confirm that from her very beginnings, the Catholic Church has been countercultural. As an 18-year-old Catholic man, it seems to me that many of my generation are passively apathetic on matters of religion. It doesn’t have to be this way. Here are a few tips for growing closer to Christ as a young man.
There is something about witnessing a grown man’s tears. Even a single escaped droplet traces his cheek like an exclamation point, deeply impressing whatever circumstances or moral-of-the-story that brought him to the verge of choked emotion.
Advent is an opportunity to examine one’s conscience – all the penance services and confession sessions are an excellent reminder of inevitable human failing – and even bathed in the beauty of the Christmas season, we are all aware (especially if we have small children!) of the potential pitfalls of the holidays.
