Barbara Lynch’s hometown ties to Cumberland are strong. A descendant of one of the founding Italian families near St. Anthony the Abbot Church, most of her siblings are still in the area as well as her children.

“You cannot explain the noise, noise, noise,” Katie Zenner of Medford said, describing the scene of World Youth Day in Lisbon, Aug. 1-6. This noise was hundreds of thousands of people chanting to Pope Francis, singing songs in their native languages and jumbo-trons transmitting live video.
Jen Metzger is the new associate director of the Office of Evangelization; her title is Associate Director for Youth Discipleship. Prior to joining the diocesan staff, she worked with the Eagle River cluster of parishes, serving as the director of faith formation and youth ministry.
“How important you are to our diocesan church,” Bishop James P. Powers said to more than 100 couples celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2023. The men and women were gathered for the annual Wedding Jubilee Mass and luncheon, a diocesan event that took place Saturday, July 29, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior.
The Northern Lakes Catholic Community of St. Albert in Land O’ Lakes; St. Kunegunda in Sugar Camp; St. Mary in Phelps; St. Theresa in Three Lakes; and St. Peter in Eagle River, along with other local business and organizations, supported the Northwoods Share Free Community Picnic at Riverside Park in Eagle River on Tuesday, July 18.
This summer, two diocesan churches are celebrating the completion of major building projects, bringing to fruition plans developed decades earlier.
