Barbara Lynch’s hometown ties to Cumberland are strong. A descendant of one of the founding Italian families near St. Anthony the Abbot Church, most of her siblings are still in the area as well as her children.

As a new school year begins, many parents will contemplate where to send their children to school. For two mothers in the Diocese of Superior, teaching them at home was the answer.

“You cannot explain the noise, noise, noise,” Katie Zenner of Medford said, describing the scene of World Youth Day in Lisbon, Aug. 1-6. This noise was hundreds of thousands of people chanting to Pope Francis, singing songs in their native languages and jumbo-trons transmitting live video.

Jen Metzger is the new associate director of the Office of Evangelization; her title is Associate Director for Youth Discipleship. Prior to joining the diocesan staff, she worked with the Eagle River cluster of parishes, serving as the director of faith formation and youth ministry.

“How important you are to our diocesan church,” Bishop James P. Powers said to more than 100 couples celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2023. The men and women were gathered for the annual Wedding Jubilee Mass and luncheon, a diocesan event that took place Saturday, July 29, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior.
